Castles and churches

This area borders 4 different countries, and boasts a wealth of beautiful castles and forbidding fortresses, mysterious monasteries and impressive churches.

Schattenburg castle Feldkirch

Vorarlberg's loveliest old town cowers at the feet of the menacing bulk of the Schattenburg. The castle, once the seat of the earls of Montfort, now houses a newly renovated museum. From the battlements visitors can enjoy a fabulous view over the town of Feldkirch.

The abbey library and cathedral, St. Gallen

The abbey precinct in St.Gallen is included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Thanks to its rich decoration and perfect classical proportions, the grand hall in the abbey library is famed as the finest example of a Baroque interior in Switzerland and, indeed, as one of the most architecturally accomplished library buildings in the world.

Einsiedeln monastery

Dominating the surrounding region, the Benedictine abbey of Einsiedeln, now an imposing Baroque complex dating from the 18th century, was originally founded over a thousand years ago. Thanks to the much-venerated "Black Madonna", Einsiedelnhas been one of Europe's leading places of pilgrimage since the Middle Ages. The ancient route of San Diego de Compostela passes close by.

Meersburg castle

Meersburg castle towers high above Lake Constance, a real landmark dominating the surrounding countryside. The ancient castle, the new palace and the excellently preserved town with its surrounding vineyards all combine to ensure that a visit to Meersburg is a really memorable experience.

Neuschwanstein castle

The fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein was built on order of King Ludwig II. and construction began in 1868. Set on a craggy outcrop of rock against a dramatic mountain background it recreated, as Richard Wagner wrote, "the castle of an archetypal teutonic knight".

The Napoleon museum

Founded in the year 1906, the Napoleon museum is the only German-language museum dedicated to Napoleonic history. It covers events from the period of the French Revolution right through to the time of the First World War. By the way - Napoleon III spent his childhood here!
