The island town of Lindau

Lindau is the most south-westerly town in Bavaria, and one of the region's leading tourist centres. This historical town, set on an island in Lake Constance, is linked to its leafy suburbs on the mainland by a bridge and a railway embankment. A walk along the harbour, with the mountains of Switzerland as a backdrop, is stunning.

A sleepy town on the Bavarian shores of Lake Constance

The island town of Lindau is easily reached by car, bus or boat. Arriving in Lindau on the steamer from Bregenz, for example, you will pass the Bavarian lion standing guard over the harbour entrance, and get a fabulous view of the town!

It's great to wander through the narrow alleyways of the old town, past the artistically painted town hall and the lovingly restored half-timbered houses. The lakeside promenade really is still a promenade, where people stroll to see and be seen. The view of the (possibly snow-capped) mountains of Switzerland is enough to set your pulse racing.
