Hagnau Wine Growers' Association

An excellent drop of wine

Can monks and abbots specialising in wine be wrong?  Hardly, it would seem. For many centuries past, all the largest and richest monasteries in the whole pre-alpine area owned vineyards and wine cellars in Hagnau. Even then the Hagnauer speciality lakeside wine was appreciated by all.

Nowadays 145 hectares of vineyards are worked, situated on south-facing slopes stretching down to the banks of Lake Constance. 60 families of wine-growers profit from the sun-drenched vineyard slopes, which in turn benefit from the mild lakeside climate and grape varieties that appreciate the soil type: Müller-Thurgau, Weißburgunder, Grauer Burgunder, blauer Spätburgunder, Kerner, Bacchus, Regent and St. Laurent. It was back in the year 1881 when these families, at the instigation of their vicar, Heinrich Hansjakob, united to found the first winegrowers' association.
