A ride on the Appenzell railway network

This train trip provides a great way of accessing the Appenzell railway network and the limitless selection of excursions and mountain railways in the Appenzell region.

The mountain railway from Rheineck to Walzenhausen is a narrow gauge railway in Eastern Switzerland, was formerly privately owned. Only 1.96 kilometres long, this part cogwheel, part adhesion railway provides a twice-hourly service from Rheineck in the canton of St. Gallen to Walzenhausen in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. The locals still call it the "Walzenhausener-Bähnli" (little Walzenhausen railway).

The railway is part of the Rorschach–Heiden AR–Walzenhausen–Rheineck–Rorschach "Round Robin". This round trip includes a ride on two mountain railways (Rorschach-Heiden-Bergbahn plus the Rheineck–Walzenhausen mountain railway), a trip by Swiss post bus and a boat cruise on Lake Constance (Rheineck SG–Rorschach).
